Personalized chiropractic treatment designed to relieve pain, restore movement, and improve your overall quality of life.
Pain or stiffness through the middle and upper back can make sitting, working, exercising, sleeping, and even taking a comfortable deep breath more difficult.
Some people describe pain directly along the spine. Others feel tightness or aching between the shoulder blades, around the ribs, or across the upper back.
At Toronto Neck & Back Pain Clinic, we provide straightforward, short-term chiropractic care focused on helping you reduce pain, restore movement, and get back to normal activity.
The middle and upper portion of your spine—the thoracic spine—moves differently from your neck and lower back because it also connects with your ribs.
Pain in this area can be associated with:
Sometimes there is an obvious injury. In other cases, discomfort gradually develops from repeated activity, prolonged positions, or changes in movement.
An assessment can help determine what appears to be contributing to your particular symptoms.
Aching, burning, tightness, or stiffness between the shoulder blades is a common upper-back complaint.
For some people it becomes noticeable after prolonged computer work, driving, reading, or other activities that keep the body in one position for a long time.
The answer isn’t necessarily to maintain one “perfect” posture all day.
Our bodies are designed to move. Changing positions regularly, restoring comfortable movement, and building the capacity to tolerate everyday activities can often be more useful than trying to hold yourself rigidly in one position.
The joints and muscles of the mid and upper back work closely with the ribs, so some musculoskeletal problems in this area can make twisting, reaching, coughing, or taking a deep breath uncomfortable.
However, pain associated with breathing isn’t always musculoskeletal. If upper-back or rib pain occurs with shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, serious illness, or other concerning symptoms, prompt medical assessment is appropriate.
If the problem appears mechanical, an examination can help determine whether restricted movement or irritation involving the thoracic spine, ribs, or surrounding tissues may be contributing.
Chiropractic care may be an appropriate conservative treatment option for some mechanical problems involving the mid and upper back.
Depending on your condition, treatment may include spinal manipulation or mobilization, advice about movement and activity, and appropriate exercises or self-care recommendations.
The goal is straightforward: help you feel better, move better, and function better.
Not everyone needs the same amount of treatment. We’ll assess your problem, see how you’re responding, and discuss what makes sense as you go.
Your first visit includes:
Your complete first visit is $47.
There are no contracts or unnecessary long-term treatment plans.
Follow-up chiropractic treatments are $50 per visit.
For many uncomplicated mechanical upper-back problems, regular comfortable movement can be helpful.
Depending on your condition, useful strategies may include:
Your recommendations should fit your particular problem rather than following a one-size-fits-all routine.
Most mid and upper-back pain is musculoskeletal, but pain in this area doesn’t always come from the spine, muscles, or joints.
Seek prompt medical attention for unexplained upper-back pain associated with chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, fainting or severe dizziness, significant trauma, fever or serious illness, new neurological symptoms, or other symptoms that concern you.
If you’re uncertain whether chiropractic care is appropriate, you’re welcome to contact us first.
Not necessarily.
Many uncomplicated mechanical back problems can be assessed without imaging. X-rays, MRI, or other testing may be appropriate when your history, symptoms, examination findings, or progress suggest that additional investigation is warranted.
If we believe your problem requires medical assessment, imaging, or another healthcare provider, we’ll recommend that rather than continuing chiropractic treatment unnecessarily.
