Shoulder, Hip & Joint Pain Treatment in Toronto

Chiropractic care isn’t limited to the spine.

Shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, ankle, and other joint problems can affect how comfortably you work, exercise, walk, sleep, and perform everyday activities.

At Toronto Neck & Back Pain Clinic, we assess musculoskeletal joint problems to determine what appears to be causing your symptoms, whether chiropractic care is appropriate, and when another type of care may make more sense.

What Joint Problems Can a Chiropractor Assess?

Musculoskeletal problems can affect joints throughout the body, including the:

  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Wrists and hands
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Ankles and feet

Symptoms may develop after an injury, repetitive activity, exercise, prolonged positions, changes in activity, or gradually over time.

Some joint problems may respond to conservative musculoskeletal care. Others may require rehabilitation, medical assessment, imaging, or another healthcare provider.

The first step is figuring out what kind of problem you appear to have.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can arise from muscles, tendons, joints, or other structures around the shoulder and upper back.

Symptoms may interfere with reaching overhead, lifting, exercising, sleeping on the affected side, or everyday activities.

Because neck problems can sometimes also produce symptoms around the shoulder or arm, determining where the symptoms originate can be important.

Hip and Knee Pain

Hip and knee discomfort can affect walking, stairs, running, exercise, and getting up and down comfortably.

Sometimes symptoms follow an injury. In other cases they develop gradually from activity, changes in joint function, tendon problems, arthritis, or other musculoskeletal conditions.

Treatment isn’t appropriate simply because a joint hurts. The nature of the problem matters.

Can Chiropractic Care Help Joint Pain?

For appropriate musculoskeletal problems, chiropractic care may include joint manipulation or mobilization, advice about movement and activity, and exercises or self-care recommendations.

In some cases, however, structured rehabilitation may be more important than hands-on treatment. Other problems may require medical investigation or specialist care.

If we believe physiotherapy, medical assessment, imaging, or another healthcare provider would be more appropriate, we’ll tell you.

Our goal isn’t to make every joint problem a chiropractic problem.

It’s to help determine what appears to be wrong and what makes sense to do about it.

What Happens at Your First Visit?

Your first visit includes:

  • A discussion of your symptoms and health history
  • Examination of the affected joint and related areas
  • An explanation of what we find
  • Treatment on the first visit when appropriate
  • Recommendations for activity, movement, or self-care

Your complete first visit is $47.

Follow-up chiropractic treatments are $50 per visit.

There are no contracts or unnecessary long-term treatment plans.

When Should Joint Pain Be Further Evaluated?

Some joint problems require medical assessment rather than—or before—chiropractic treatment.

Further assessment may be appropriate for significant trauma, suspected fracture or dislocation, a hot or markedly swollen joint, fever or illness associated with joint symptoms, progressive weakness or neurological symptoms, inability to bear weight after an injury, or persistent symptoms that aren’t responding as expected.

If your examination suggests another type of care is more appropriate, we’ll recommend it.

What Can I Do for Joint Pain?

The appropriate strategy depends on the problem, but maintaining or gradually restoring movement and physical capacity is often important.

Depending on your condition, recommendations may involve:

  • Temporarily modifying aggravating activities
  • Maintaining comfortable movement
  • Walking or other appropriate physical activity
  • Gradually restoring range of motion
  • Progressive strengthening when appropriate
  • Returning gradually to normal work, exercise, or recreational activities

The objective isn’t simply to make a painful joint feel better for a few hours. It’s to help you move and function better.
