Headache Treatment in Toronto

Headaches are common, but they don’t all have the same cause.

Some headaches may be associated with problems involving the neck, including restricted movement, joint or muscle irritation, injury, or prolonged positions and activities. Others—including migraine and headaches caused by medical conditions—may require a different approach.

At Toronto Neck & Back Pain Clinic, the first step is determining whether your headache appears to have a musculoskeletal or neck-related component and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

Can Headaches Come From the Neck?

Yes. Some headaches can originate from structures in the neck. These are commonly referred to as cervicogenic headaches.

Symptoms may include:

  • Headache associated with neck pain or stiffness
  • Pain beginning around the neck or back of the head
  • Headache aggravated by certain neck movements or positions
  • Restricted or uncomfortable neck movement
  • Pain that may extend toward the side or front of the head
  • Headaches following a neck injury or whiplash

Having neck discomfort with a headache doesn’t automatically mean the neck is causing it, however. An assessment helps us determine whether there appears to be a meaningful connection.

What About Tension Headaches and Migraines?

Different types of headaches require different approaches.

Tension-type headaches may involve a combination of factors, including muscular tension and sensitivity, stress, sleep, activity, and other influences.

Migraine is a neurological condition and shouldn’t simply be treated as a neck problem. Some people with migraine also experience neck pain or stiffness, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the neck is the cause of the migraine.

Our goal isn’t to label every headache as a chiropractic problem.

It’s to determine whether there is a mechanical neck component that may reasonably benefit from care—and recognize when there isn’t.

Can Chiropractic Care Help Neck-Related Headaches?

Chiropractic care is one conservative treatment option for some people with cervicogenic or neck-related headaches.

Depending on your examination findings, care may include spinal manipulation or mobilization, advice about movement and activity, and appropriate exercises or self-care.

The goal is to improve neck movement and function and, when the neck is contributing to the problem, help reduce associated symptoms.

Not every headache is appropriate for chiropractic treatment. If your history or examination suggests that medical assessment or another healthcare provider is more appropriate, we’ll recommend that instead.

What Happens at Your First Visit?

Your first visit includes:

  • A discussion of your headaches, neck symptoms, and health history
  • An examination of your neck and related areas
  • An explanation of what we find
  • Treatment on the first visit when appropriate
  • Recommendations for what you can do between visits

Your complete first visit is $47.

There are no contracts or unnecessary long-term treatment plans.

Follow-up chiropractic treatments are $50 per visit.

How Much Treatment Will I Need?

There isn’t one treatment schedule that’s right for everyone.

When chiropractic care appears appropriate, we can begin with a short period of treatment and see how you respond.

Your progress, goals, preferences, and the nature of your problem help determine what comes next.

You remain in control of how much care you choose.

When Should a Headache Be Medically Evaluated?

Most headaches aren’t caused by a serious underlying problem, but some symptoms require prompt medical attention.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a sudden, extremely severe or unusual headache; headache following significant head trauma; or headache associated with new weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, loss of consciousness, significant vision changes, high fever or serious illness.

A new or substantially different headache—particularly one that is persistent, worsening, or concerning to you—also deserves appropriate assessment.

If you’re uncertain whether chiropractic care is suitable for your headaches, you’re welcome to contact us first.

What Can I Do Between Visits?

When headaches have a neck-related component, recommendations may include:

  • Taking regular movement breaks from prolonged sitting or computer work
  • Gentle neck movement within comfortable limits
  • Regular physical activity
  • Paying attention to activities or positions that consistently aggravate symptoms
  • Gradually restoring comfortable neck mobility and physical capacity
  • Following any specific exercises recommended for your particular problem

There isn’t one posture, stretch, or exercise that’s right for every headache.
