Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition that develops gradually, causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. As symptoms progress, they can interfere with daily tasks, making simple activities uncomfortable and difficult to perform.

Understanding The Cause:

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in the wrist formed by small bones and a ligament, through which tendons and the median nerve pass. This nerve travels from the neck down the arm into the hand, controlling movement and sensation. When the space within the tunnel becomes restricted, it places pressure on the nerve, leading to symptoms.

Why Symptoms Develop:

Factors such as inflammation, fluid retention, or structural changes can reduce space within the carpal tunnel and compress the median nerve. This pressure affects normal nerve function, resulting in increasing discomfort, weakness, and reduced hand mobility over time.

Chiropractic Care and Treatment:

Treatment focuses on reducing pressure on the nerve and restoring proper movement. Chiropractic care may include soft tissue therapy, joint mobilization, and specialized techniques to improve nerve mobility. These approaches can help reduce symptoms, improve function, and support long-term recovery in mild to moderate cases.

To achieve a satisfactory outcome for the patient, chiropractic care may also include addressing musculoskeletal issues along the course of the median nerve as dysfunction in the neck, shoulder/arm, and forearm/elbow often co-occur with carpal tunnel syndrome and can produce CTS-like symptoms. If non-musculoskeletal conditions are present, the case may need to be co-managed with the patient’s medical physician or a specialist.
