Numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the hand is often blamed on carpal tunnel syndrome—but the symptoms don’t always originate at the wrist.
Problems involving nerves in the neck, arm, or wrist can sometimes produce similar symptoms. The first step is determining where your symptoms appear to be coming from and what type of care is appropriate.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist.
Typical symptoms may include:
Not everyone with hand numbness or tingling has carpal tunnel syndrome, however.
Sometimes.
Nerves that eventually travel into the arm and hand begin in the neck. Irritation involving these nerves can produce pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness farther down the arm.
Other problems involving the shoulder, elbow, forearm, or wrist can also produce symptoms that may initially seem similar.
That’s why where you feel the symptom doesn’t always tell us where the problem originates.
An examination can help determine whether your symptoms appear consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome, a neck-related problem, or another condition that may require further assessment.
That depends on what is causing the symptoms.
If your examination suggests that a mechanical problem involving the neck or another musculoskeletal area is contributing to your arm or hand symptoms, chiropractic care may be appropriate.
If the findings suggest that your condition would be better managed by a physician, physiotherapist, hand specialist, or other healthcare provider, we’ll recommend that instead.
The goal isn’t to make every problem a chiropractic problem. It’s to help determine what kind of problem you appear to have and what makes sense to do next.
Not necessarily.
Many nerve and musculoskeletal problems can initially be evaluated through your history and physical examination.
Additional testing—such as nerve-conduction studies, imaging, or medical investigation—may be appropriate when symptoms, examination findings, severity, or progression indicate that more information is needed.
If further testing appears warranted, we’ll recommend appropriate follow-up.
Persistent or worsening numbness should be assessed, particularly when it is accompanied by weakness or loss of hand function.
Seek appropriate medical evaluation for symptoms such as:
