A common question at the chiropractic clinic is “What’s causing my neck / back pain?” It’s a good and interesting question to know your neck and back pain cause. Patients do have access to information that might help them determine the cause of their pain. Especially when considering the amount of info that pops up when you “Google” back pain.

However, once they are on Google, it’s not as simple as it may seem to figure out that neck or back pain. That’s the benefit of finding a doctor or therapist to work with. This can decrease the complexity of what neck or back pain might involve. It can often be easier to manage than it might appear.

For example, with most forms of back pain there is a mechanical component. This may not be the main component or the primary component or even the biggest component, but it’s a component. This mechanical component determines how well the back is sitting and moving. Some people would call this “function”.

The research would show that in most types of back pain some degree of dysfunction is present. Something is not sitting or moving right. Quite often a chemical solution to the pain is attempted. Some relief is possible but it’s often fleeting or temporary with this approach. That’s because a chemical solution will not impart a complete physical result or outcome in many cases.

Sometimes changing the chemistry will allow the body to physically work better by decreasing inflammation or swelling. That may allow the body to move better by reducing pain signals or pressure that can cause a part of the restriction in movement.

This doesn’t necessarily correct the underlying dysfunction even if some of the function seems to improve. Finding and determining the underlying dysfunction or part of the back that’s not sitting or moving right is still key. Encouraging the spine to sit or move better is a more targeted solution for a long term resolution.

Back Pain occurs in a lot of people.

Back pain can interfere with walking, bending, and living life.

People want to know their neck and back pain cause because they’re curious and it’s interesting. However, they really aren’t asking to know what part is injured or what is making them feel the back pain or discomfort.

How they ended up with the neck or back pain at all is what they want to know! That’s also a valid question, and most times they’re looking for a cause-and-effect answer. That means there was an event, something they did, or something they’ve been doing that caused their back pain.

With common back pain (and many of the more complex or problematic cases of back pain) there is a different component to consider. It’s not always about what’s happened recently or what may have happened that brought the pain to the surface. It may not even that there was a new accident or injury. It can be about what the body has been used for and how well it was working prior to the pain being present.

What an accident may have brought to the surface or what has otherwise accumulated over time as dysfunction from use indicates how well a back is working. We expect cause and effect or the timing of such to be more closely related. An explanation that involves anything outside of immediate cause and effect is difficult to understand or accept.

In other words, it’s harder to know what has caused or is causing part of the back pain when it’s something that’s developed over time. This process will involve some calculation and some review of what a person has been through in their life. What they routinely do in life and how they do it can be helpful in determining the cause or source of the back pain as well as a specifically matched treatment plan.

It’s sometimes more important to know what state or shape the back is in now and what we want that state or shape to be like in the future. Obviously, we want it to feel better, work better and stay better. Often, that can be determined simply from knowing where we’re at and then where we want to go. A good treatment approach will help bridge the gap. And it will help do it efficiently.

In summary, the next time a neck pain or back pain makes its way into your life, consider that your body may be giving you a message. That message may not relate exactly to what’s wrong or what has recently happened, rather it is letting you know something is brewing. By proactively looking for a way to assess how well your neck and back are functioning, a customized, individualized, and personalized treatment approach can be made. It will no doubt get you back to your life with good function and no pain.
