What do you do?

Most ignore the sensation and hope it goes away. It usually does for a short while until you find yourself experiencing the same feeling again sometime later and usually worse.

That feeling has turned from a tingling and/or numbness to a sharp, piercing pain shooting up through the wrist and up your arm. This is when most finally take notice and seek care.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful progressive condition caused by nerve compression in the wrist. It occurs when the median nerve (running from the forearm into the palm of your hand) becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers. It also controls impulses to the small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can result from repetitive use of the wrists, hands, and fingers.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway of ligaments and bones at the base of the hand (and is home to the median nerve and tendons). If the tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel, the median nerve compresses. This leads to painful sensations, weakness, and numbness.

Other symptoms include (but are not limited to):

· burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of hand and fingers
· fingers feeling useless and swollen (although perhaps no visible swelling)
· feeling of needing to “shake out” hand or wrist
· decreased grip strength
· Inability to tell between hot and cold by touch

Are you at risk for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

This condition usually occurs in adults and women are more likely to suffer from this condition as their carpal tunnel itself is smaller (than men). People with diabetes or other metabolic disorders that affect the body’s nerves might make them more prone to compression and therefore be at higher risk.

Contrary to popular belief, this condition is not restricted solely to those in a particular industry, however it is more prone in adults that work in jobs where specific motions are repeated consistently. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a ‘repetitive stress injury’ (commonly abbreviated: RSI).

Chiropractic Care can help!

Common non-surgical support for carpal tunnel syndrome include acupuncture, yoga, and chiropractic care. Chiropractic manipulation has proven to be very effective for people with this problem, seeking noninvasive relief. A spinal adjustment is key as misalignment in the spine does contribute to this condition. Chiropractic adjustments will help misalignments in the spine that contribute to the symptom as well as other specific adjustments – not only tailored to the carpal tunnel itself, but actually focusing on areas tracing up to nerves in the neck.

Chiropractic help for this annoying syndrome is convenient, comfortable, and safe with little risks nor any of the complications of carpal release surgery.

Be sure to call us at 416-960-9355 with any questions or visit http://torontoneckandbackpain.com/ to learn more.

Dr. David Koivuranta
Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic
416-960-9355
www.torontoneckandbackpainclinic.com
www.dkchiroblog.com

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a debilitating condition.
